Local residents should be aware of a telephone scam involving someone attempting to impersonate a member of the Polk County Tax Office.
On Wednesday, an area resident received a phone call around 8 p.m. from someone claiming they worked with the tax office and that there was a problem with the resident’s tax bill. The resident knew he had paid his bill and didn’t provide any information.
The following morning, he visited the tax office, verified his bill was paid in full and reported the call.
No one from the Polk County Tax Office will ever ask for money over the phone, nor will anyone from the office call a resident’s home after business hours.
Anyone wishing to report a scam can contact the Polk County Sheriff’s Office 828-894-3001 or go online to Consumer Reporting at the following link. http://www.consumerfraudreporting.org/reporting.php
