Due to coronavirus-related concerns, most Polk County Local Government departments, the Tax Office and the North Carolina Dept. of Motor Vehicles tax and tag office in Columbus are closed to visitors until further notice.
The Board of Elections and Registrar of Deeds in the Womack Building at 40 Courthouse St. are closed to walk-ins but are conducting in-person business by appointment only. The Board of Elections can be reached at (828) 894-8181. The Registrar of Deeds can be reached at (828) 894-8450.
Business with the Building Inspections, Planning and Zoning, and Environmental Health departments at the Community Development Building at 35 Walker St. can be conducted by phone, email and dropbox. For more information, call (828) 894-3739.
Polk County Tax Office and DMV staff will be available to answer questions by phone at (828) 894-8500 during the weekday office hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Curbside also service will be available for Tax and Tag. For curbside service, call for an appointment by phone at (828) 894-8500.
Polk County tax payments and tax-related documents may be dropped off at a drop box outside the department’s office at 51 Walker St. Payments and documents also may be mailed to: Polk County Tax Office, PO Box 308 Columbus, NC 28722. Please note that the drop box cannot be used for DMV payments.
Online payments also may be made at the Tax Assessor and Collector link at PolkNC.org.
