Polk County lifts call for voluntary evacuations on May 31, closes temporary storm shelter

After consultation with the North Carolina Dept. of Transportation, the North Carolina Geological Survey and public safety partners, Polk County Local Government is closing the public shelter May 31 that was set up during the storms.

Polk County Local Government also has lifted its call for voluntary residential evacuations and people can return to their homes. Everyone is encouraged to use caution on all roads. Some roads are still closed except to local traffic.

Residents should be careful as they return to their homes and should pay attention for any hazardous condition warnings from local media or emergency management.

Citizens also should pay attention for upcoming public announcements about recovery efforts and available resources.
