Volunteers invited to help with Charters of Freedom Setting workday in Columbus on Saturday, Sept. 7

Volunteers participated in a workday on Aug. 17 for the Charters of Freedom Setting in Veteran's Park in Columbus.

Polk County’s Charters of Freedom Setting in Veteran’s Memorial Park in Columbus is nearing completion thanks to the continued work of community volunteers. Another workday for the final preparation, which will include raking, leveling soil, mulching, planting and cleaning up Veteran’s plaza, is planned from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 7.

The previous workday on Aug. 17 included more than a dozen volunteers showing up with yard tools in hand to remove old shrubs, dig rain trenches, pick up rocks and bricks, remove pallets and do general clean-up. The work crew included residents from Columbus, Tryon, Lynn and Rutherfordton. The Town of Columbus also provided support with its dump truck and a front loader.

Everyone also is invited to the dedication of the Charters of Freedom at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Columbus at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 17, which is Constitution Day.
