Any eligible Polk County voter wishing to register for the May primary election or change their party affiliation prior to the primary must do so by April 13 at 5 p.m.
The 2018 primary will be held May 8. All voters registered with a party must vote on that party’s ballot. Unaffiliated voters may choose either the Democratic or Republican ballot while registered Libertarians do not have a contest in the primary.
A registered voter may change affiliation either by making the change on his or her voter ID card or filling out a voter registration application. Those applications can be delivered or mailed to the Polk County Board of Elections office.
The Board of Elections office is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and is located in the Womack Building at 40 Courthouse Street in Columbus. The mailing address is Polk County Board of Elections, PO Box 253, Columbus N.C. 28722.
Registration applications are available at the Polk County Board of Elections office or the State Board of Elections and Ethics Enforcement website. Polk County elections officials are also happy to mail an application to any resident.
