Author Ashley English will soon speak at the Columbus Library about raising chickens, a topic she is very knowledgeable of.
English, who lives in Candler, is the author of 11 books, including “Keeping Chickens.” This book was one of her Homemade Living book series, which showcases a variety of topics related to small-scale homesteading (including “Keeping Chickens,” “Canning & Preserving,” “Keeping Bees,” “Home Dairy,” and “Home Apothecary”).
English will be at the Columbus Library at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, for her talk, which is titled “Backyard Chickens.”
In this workshop, we’ll learn the basics of keeping a flock of backyard chickens and discuss the following topics:
- What to consider beforehand
- Breed selection
- Obtaining chickens
- Housing
- Feeding
- Chicks
- Health and wellness
- Eggs
English holds degrees in holistic nutrition and sociology, and is an alumnus of both The University of North Carolina at Asheville and Clayton College of Natural Health. She has worked over the years with a number of nonprofit organizations committed to social and agricultural issues and regularly contributes to a number of international, national, and regional print publications.
English has also written books titled “A Year of Pies; Handmade Gatherings,” “A Year of Picnics,” “The Essential Book of Homesteading” and “Southern From Scratch.”
English has been featured in numerous major publications, including Food & Wine, Delish, Edible Magazines, and Anthology. She has been a repeat guest on Martha Stewart Radio on SiriusXM. She was also the subject of a film by Dark Rye, Whole Foods Market’s online magazine (click here to view).
