Here’s a quick update on the three ongoing wildfires happening in Polk County.

According to Polk County Public Information Director Kellie Cannon:

“The Black Cove Fire, which originated off of Green River Cove Road, has burned a total of 1,083 acres and is zero percent contained. No houses or structures have been damaged.

“Deep Woods Fire, which is off of Deep Woods Lane, has burned a total of 1,102 acres and is zero percent contained. One house was a complete loss, two structures were damaged, and one outbuilding was a complete loss. This area is currently under a mandatory evacuation order.

“The Fish Hook Fire, which burned a total of 190 acres, is now 50 percent contained. Three houses were a complete loss with one structure that has damage.

“If you need pet or livestock evacuation and boarding due to these fires, please contact Polk County Animal Control at 828-817-7984.”

Cannon also noted that donations are being accepted.

Donations of bottled water, sports drinks, and powered drink mixes, along with snack items, are the biggest needs at these are quick and easy for fire fighters to consume while working.

Donations may be dropped off at the following locations: Foothills Community Church at 2720 Landrum Road, Columbus and Friendship Baptist Church at Friendship Church Road, Saluda.

Cannon also asked that people stay out of the evacuated areas. “We will notify homeowners when it is safe to return, but crews are still battling fires in the area.”
