Here’s a quick update on the three ongoing wildfires happening in Polk County.

According to Polk County Public Information Director Kellie Cannon:

“The Black Cove Fire has burned a total of 2,813 acres and is zero percent contained. The Deep Woods Fire has burned a total of 2,742 acres and is also zero percent contained.

“The Fish Hook Fire has burned a total of 199 acres, however, we are happy to report it is 69 percent contained and the evacuation order for this area has been lifted.

 “The FAA has placed a temporary flight restriction over the fire allowing for firefighting aircraft to operate safely. Please do not fly drones in the area.

“The Forest Service is launching an evacuation preparedness campaign and will release a map later today detailing zone levels.

“There are three levels:

“Level 1: An evacuation or protection alert indicating that wildfire threat is in the area. We advise you to begin planning and packing in case an evacuation becomes necessary.

“Level 2 signifies a high probability of needing to evacuate. You should prepare by packing essential items, getting your family, pets, and vehicle ready for departure.

“Level 3 is an evacuation order which means residents in the affected area are required to leave using designated routes.

“As a reminder, Polk County Emergency Shelter is open at 75 Carmel Lane in Columbus. Although the shelter isn’t pet-friendly you can coordinate with Polk County Animal Control by calling 828-817-7984. Animal Control has already assisted with multiple animal evacuations to include pet and livestock.
