At its upcoming meeting on December 5, Polk County will swear in the three new members of the Board of Commissioners, Tommy Melton, David Moore, and Paul (Little) Beiler, all three are incumbents. They will continue to serve the citizens of Polk County, along with Andre Overholt and Myron Yoder, until the next election in two years.
In Polk County, the Commissioners do the following:
· Adopt the county’s annual budget by June 30 of each year
· Establish the annual property tax rate
· Appoint the county manager, county clerk, county attorney and tax administrator
· Appoint various officials and representatives to advisory boards and commissions
· Provide funding for public school facilities capital projects
· Regulate land-use and zoning outside municipal boundaries
· Provide for public safety and the welfare of all Polk County residents
· Conduct long-range planning for county needs
· Enact local ordinances
· Enter into contracts
· Establish new programs and departments to provide services to the citizens
· Serve as liaisons to local, state and federal boards and commissions
All counties in North Carolina are governed by an elected board of commissioners. The number of Commissioners in Polk County is similar to other counties across the state, though some have as few as three or as many as eleven.

Statement of Purpose
The Polk County Board of Commissioners perform the general responsibilities of county government. The Board sets local property tax rates and adopts county budget, passes ordinances, resolutions and orders to establish county policies. The Clerk to the Board keeps official records of board meetings and decisions, publishes notices, conducts research and provides information.
