The Columbus Library has added a new mural that definitely has a “wow” factor.

The mural, which can be seen at the checkout area, was recently completed by Columbia, S.C., artist Maria DeFelice, who also installed the library’s mural in the children’s section.

“We wanted to celebrate Polk County with a few of the things that make our community so special,” said Polk County Libraries Director Marcie Dowling. “Through the drafting process we had the idea of creating a vintage feel by using the classic ‘Greetings from…’ postcard design frequently used in the 1940s and 50s.”

Each letter in the word “Polk” is represented with an image from around the county — The “P” is a horse farm near Mill Spring; “O” is Little Bradley Falls near Saluda; “”L is a stretch of train track through Tryon; and “K” is the Polk County Courthouse in Columbus.

That isn’t all, though, as around the corner from the checkout area is a view of local mountain peaks with names, elevations, and towns marked. The image with the county’s peaks and elevations was designed by First Peak of the Blue Ridge for their new travel brochure.

“Maria created the letter and peak images by projecting photographs onto the wall and tracing the outlines,” Dowling explained. “She then painted each image from scratch using dozens of colors. We invite the community to stop by and see this new celebration of the county and discover all the surprising things the libraries have to offer!”
