Polk County NC fire update: March 23, 8:30 a.m.

An update from Polk County Local Government on the ongoing fires in Polk County.

  • The Black Cove Fire, which originated off Green River Cove Road, has burned a total of 1,239 acres and is zero percent contained. An evacuation order has been issued for 5079 to 7265 Holbrook Cove Road and Fox Paul Lane.
  • Deep Woods Fire is off Deep Woods Lane, has burned a total of 1,713 acres and is zero percent contained.
  • The Fish Hook Fire, which burned a total of 199 acres, is 50 percent contained. The evacuation notice for this fire in the Lake Adger community has been lifted, and those residents can return to their homes.

There were reports of the fourth fire, but that was later determined to be part of the Black Cove Fire.

The North Carolina Forest Service will be holding a community meeting to discuss these fires and answer questions on Sunday, Mar. 23 at 2 p.m. This meeting will be held at the Womack Building, 40 Courthouse Street in Columbus. The meeting will be recorded and posted on social media.
