The NCDOT is moving forward with plans to improve a local road and another community meeting will soon be announced to update Polk County citizens on this project.

Residents who live along Highway 9, between Highway 108 and Highway 74, will soon notice surveyors marking the right of way, according to Andrew Buchanan, who is an Assistant Division Proposal Engineer with NCDOT.

Buchanan was at a recent Polk County Board of Commissioners meeting to update the group about the project.

The plans for this state-funded project include adding turning lanes for Polk Central Elementary School and replacing seven pipe crossings. The project will widen and improve lanes and shoulders for 2.7 miles on Highway 9 and will enhance safety and improve traffic flow along with corridor.

Buchanan gave a presentation to the Board of Commissioners that included a discussion on road closures and detour options. According to the presentation, utility relocation is scheduled to begin in October of 2023 and construction would start in the fall of 2024.

The Commissioners asked that NCDOT host another community meeting to bring this information to the public’s opinion, since the initial meeting was held in 2019. A date for this meeting will be announced when it is known.
