Preliminary work to improve the Turner Shoals Dam, which will celebrate its 100th year this year, is ongoing.
Last year, Polk County received a $6.5 million State Capital and Infrastructure Fund (SCIF) Directed Grant for repairs to the dam. The project will include the installation of post-tensioned anchors that are needed to meet stability criteria and a raising of the bulkhead structures on the sides of the dam.
The objective of the work is to bring the dam into compliance with current N.C. Department of Environmental Quality requirements regarding seismic stability and the design storm along with general maintenance and upkeep.

A design report, which included drawings, was submitted to the N.C. Dam Safety Program on May 24, 2022 and comments from the program were returned on September 14, 2022. Now, GEI Consultants is working on a revision to the design and drawings based on the review comments.
The hope is to have the revisions resubmitted in February and that the project could receive approval in the spring 2023.
